Learning How To Build a Storage Shed

The storage shed is basically a structure that is built outside the house. The shed is for storing stuff like outdoor equipment. Usually, it is used to protect the equipment from harsh weather and keep them safe. Nowadays, a shed is very easy to construct as there are many building kits available and the work is easy as long as you are good at putting things together. This can also be quite adventurous and here is how you can build a shed in just a few steps:

Before you start constructing a shed, you must make sure you have the proper legal authorization from the local authorities of your town. There are many states where, if you do not have that permission, they can remove your shed and you can also pay a big fine.

But there are also states where you can build one without authorization if the shed is less than 120 square feet.

After deciding to build one and getting the authorization, you also need to make sure you have the proper space, fit for a shed. Choose a leveled ground and make sure the place does not have hidden underground pipes or cables. If you damage them, you can pay a lot to repair them. You should know that planning is the most important step in building a shed. If you plan it right, you will have a beautiful shed. Make sure the design fits and the specifications are correct.

Make sure you also have enough space in the shed for the things you want to put in it. You do not want to have to reconstruct it afterward because that is very difficult. Also, make sure you have an extra space left too, in case of something. This space can turn out to be very useful.

How To Build It?

The material necessary is wood. Using wood you will be able to make the floor, the walls, the doors, and also the roof. Then you need some hardware like corner blocks, hinges, nails, and roof tacks. To cut the wood you also require a saw.

Try to build everything from below, starting with the floor. Use the stakes to make sure the floor is decked on the ground. Then you will have to raise the frames. The nails will secure the wooden planks on the floor and foundation. Once you are done with all the walls, you need to put on the door and fix it. You can also build the door by yourself, to save some money, instead of building one. You can make it from wood too.

The two wooden pillars necessary for the shed must be placed in the center of the wooden wall. They will be about 3 feet tall and they will run across the shed. The roof can also be built using plastic or some metal and it is relatively easy. You may want to call a friend and assist you when you are building the roof. It is safer this way.

How to Choose the Best Painting Equipment

This is one aspect of do-it-yourself work where you cannot afford to skimp on materials. You will not achieve professional results by using cheap brushes that shed their bristles as you work, or cut-price rollers that disintegrate before the job is finished. Invest in the best quality equipment your budget allows if you are serious about your work.

Choosing Brushes

Paintbrushes come in pure bristle, synthetic fiber, and even foam versions. The last guarantees that you will not be left with brush strokes, and they are inexpensive enough to discard when you have finished. All-natural brushes shed a few bristles in use, but cheap brushes are the worst offenders. Usually, these have fewer bristles to start with and they are often poorly secured. Regard pure bristle brushes as an investment; you can reuse them repeatedly, and many professional painters claim that their performance improves with age.

Painting Equipment

Synthetic brushes, usually with nylon bristles, have the big advantage of being molt-free, and they perform well with water-based paints. A more expensive version, made of polyester and nylon, is particularly easy to handle and said to give a superior finish.

Tool Box Essentials

Serious painters will need a range of brushes: slimline, 12 and 25mm (A and fin), for fiddly areas, such as window frames; medium-sized versions, 50 and 75mm (2 and 3in), for doors, floors, and skirting (base) boards; and large types, 100mm (4in), for quick coverage of walls and ceilings. You might like to add a few extras to this basic kit: – A cutting-in (sash) brush, specially angled to cope with hard-to-reach areas, is particularly useful if you are painting around window frames. It comes in 12mm, 18mm, and 25mm versions.

Practical Tips

  • Work new brushes across your palm to dislodge any loose bristles.
  • Use an extension pole with your roller when painting ceilings.
  • Imagine you are holding a pen when using lightweight brushes; this gives maximum control.
  • A radiator brush, available with a plastic or metal handle and designed to reach the wall behind a radiator.
  • Special-effects brushes, from stubby stencil brushes to mottlers, which allow you to create the distinctive look of woodgrain, and a range of artist’s brushes for adding detail.

Paint Pads

If you are new to decorating, you may find that a paint pad is easier to handle than a brush. It gives a speedy and even finish, is light to handle, and works particularly well with acrylic paints. Experiment with a single pad first before investing in a kit, to make sure you are happy with the tool.

Each pad consists of a layer of fiber on top of a layer of foam, which in turn is attached to a plastic handle. Use paint pads in conjunction with a paint tray. If you purchase a kit, a tray will usually be provided.

Getting Your Kitchen Organized

Whether we want to admit it or not, we spend a good deal of time in the kitchen every day for eating purposes, cooking, baking, and also storing things. This is why the kitchen is a very important place. Many things need to be taken into consideration when you want to create the perfect organized kitchen.

The food preparation gadgets must be placed close to the sink. They can include a salad spinner, a bowl, and a food processor. Easy access is the key.

After that, you need to put all the pans and pots close to the stove. You can leave them out in the open or inside a cupboard. Most people keep the lids and the pots together too.

If you aren’t baking that often, you can keep the mixing bowls, measuring cups, and baking pans close to the sink too. Do not put the baking supplies that much far away but try to keep them together.

Set up a way to organize the glasses, napkins, placemats, and dishes in a single place so that eating is enjoyable. Put them all in one established area. The drawer that is closer to the table can have the napkins and the placements. If you follow these steps you will save a lot of time looking for them and a lot of energy too. You do not want the napkins or the spoons on the other side of the room.

The food has to be stored in containers. So must the food storage items be. For example, put the food wrapping paper or foil next to the food. The purpose of these guidelines is to avoid that moment when you think you can not find anything in your kitchen.

The small tools must be placed in drawers according to their function. It is improper to put a rolling pin next to the tea ball or the knife sharpener. Put the baking items together too and the spoons and knives the same.

There are also a lot of people that like to store the items they use most often in a container placed on the counter. You can find different baskets of many shapes and colors that are very useful. The less useful items can be tucked away in the drawer. The good liners from the drawers prevent slipping and sliding. You can also buy from your local store different containers that can turn your mess into perfect order.

Plus, let’s not forget about the macho drawer. This drawer has all those items that are usually used by men: small hammer, hooks, nails, or screwdriver. You can get some small containers made of plastic and store these little things. In this way, you will minimize the space occupied by the macho items. If you can, get a small toolbox and put the macho stuff in it, and clear the whole drawer. You can get that toolbox from any local store.

A lot of homeowners nowadays choose to use window treatments on their house windows for a variety of reasons from adding some privacy to hiding an undesirable view to enhancing the style or appearance of an area.

To help you out in deciding which window treatment ideas would be best for your home, here is an introduction to some of the basic types of window treatments.

Window Treatment Ideas for House Windows

Curtains

One of the most commonly used window treatments, curtains are fabric panels that hang from the top portion of the window. An exception, however, would be café curtains which hang from the middle portion of the window, instead of from the top. Curtains are a great window treatment option since they can easily be opened or closed using tiebacks, depending on how much privacy or how much light you want to have. They also come in a wide range of colors and materials so you can choose those that would best complement the area or room where they would be installed in.

Draperies

Draperies are similar to curtains in that they are also made of fabric panels. Unlike curtains, however, draperies come with fixed pleats on their top portion. Some pleat types which are used in most draperies include French pleats, pinch pleats, and goblet pleats. Draperies can also be opened and closed through cords on drapery rods or tracks.

Blinds

Another popular window treatment for house windows, blinds are window coverings that are made with slats. They can be adjusted to control the amount of light that enters and the amount of privacy desired. Blinds can be made with different materials such as wood, bamboo, fabric, vinyl, and metal, and can either be vertically oriented or horizontally oriented.

Shades

These are window coverings that you can raise from the bottom and can often be raised or brought down through the use of a cord. There are some modern shades, however, which are already motorized and come with wall switches and remote controls. Shades come in various styles includes puffy balloon shades, clean-lined Roman shades, and shirred Austrian shades, and can be made with vinyl, fabric, or natural woven materials.

All of these can make your room much more modern, but sometimes, you just need to replace all of the windows in your home if they’re too dated.

10 Tools For Every Garage

Sneaking a peek into the average home owner’s garage is likely to produce some interesting views into what types of tools are required, and a variety of others that may border upon specialty applications. There is however a list of generally accepted, must-have tools that one should count on being present in any garage or tool shed one enters.

The following list of ten tools is completely subjective, though much care and effort have been taken to be comprehensive with the tool selection and the types of work that can be undertaken. If the tools and machines adorning one’s favorite garage and workspace diverge dramatically, consider the special uses of the tools for the hobbies or tasks they might have been procured for.

The 10 Basic Tools Any Good Garage Should Have

1-Tool Storage: Technically a tool for one’s tools. Whether a toolbox, dedicated shelf space for larger hand tools, or even pegboard hangers, the choice one makes when it comes to storing tools will pay off many times over in the ease of finding one’s tools for any given job. Additionally, having tools openly displayed on pegboard systems can make for quick inventory and visual recognition when a tool is missing.

2-Work Bench: Another facilitator of one’s use of tools, the workbench needs to be solid, made of wood that can take a ding, or chip without falling apart. Avid do-it-yourself types need to be able to bang away on a project at times, and with a solid, functional workbench in the garage or tool shed, success is often just a bang or two away.

3-Vice Clamp: Sizes of clamps vary, but not having one can create serious challenges when needing two hands to perform some function on their current project. Being able to secure materials inside the clamping surfaces frees up hands, as well as providing additional capabilities that are built into some models of home vice clamps.

4-Air Compressor: If you have air tools, you can easily power them up with a portable air compressor or find rotary screw air compressors with high CFM ratings.

5-Screwdrivers: Many homeowners think they have more than enough of the right types of screwdrivers until the time comes when a specific application requires the driver to be larger, smaller, flat edge, or Phillips. Nothing is worse than attempting to make the wrong type of screwdriver do a job. Usually, damage to the materials or one’s fingers occurs. It’s much easier to simply invest in a quality set of widely used types of screwdrivers well in advance of ever needing them for a job.

6-Hammers: Certainly not a candidate of the one type fits all, the hammer is a powerful tool. However, if one only has a 24-ounce roofing hammer in the garage, it might make for overkill when attempting to drive finishing nails into the newly installed footboards.

7-Vice Grips: Like its clamp cousin, having a variety of sizes of vice grips will make quick work of so many jobs where one simply does not have the hand strength to hold materials still. Good three packs of vice grips in successive sizes can be found for extremely reasonable prices.

8-Glues: Again, perhaps not technically a tool, but more a supply, having the right glue for the job will have the effect of having used a quality tool. Whether a solid wood glue or even an instant super glue variety, being able to adhere pieces together (with the use of the vice clamp!) will make quick work of so many projects.

9-Pliers: Although one can go crazy on the variety of hand pliers available for purchase, having a few different styles and sizes is always a great way to obtain a solid grip producing the leverage required to get bolts loosened, nuts tightened and any number of other garage actions.

10-Cordless Drill System: Possibly bordering on a specialty item, with the availability of add-on devices, most cordless drills easily convert to power screwdrivers, sanders, mini-hand saws, oh, and of course drills.
